A Scanner Darkly (2006)

A different kind of movie. I wasn't sure weather to put this one under Sci-Fi or Animated, since it's a bit of both. At times it can be hard to follow, but once you get used to the different characters, and the way they speak, things become a lot more clear. The movie itself is about an undercover NARC in a futuristic society where most of the population is addicted to a new drug called Substance D. It's really an interesting movie, with insightful things to say about drugs and addiction. Not for everyone, as I said, it can be hard to follow in parts, and some people might be put off by the slightly rough style of the animation. It's definitely worth checking out though! Go see it and enjoy it!

Favorite Line:

Barris: This is a world getting progressively worse. Can we not agree on that? [turns to waitress] What's on the dessert menu?

Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

Yet another great Keanu Reeves movie! Not quite what I was expecting though, but still great. An interesting story with a lot of potential. It follows Johnny (Just Johnny) on his journey to reclaim his childhood memories by smuggling illegal data in his brain. The movie is filled with wild technology of the not so distant future, coupled with the freedom fighting ‘Lowteks’ reminiscent of Morpheus’s crew in the Matrix series. There were a few points where I had to say ‘What, where did that come from?’ but most of the story was easily followed and highly enjoyable! A must see!

Favorite Line:

Johnny: Listen ... I've had it with them, I've had it with you, I've had it with ALL THIS - I want ROOM SERVICE! I want the club sandwich, I want the cold Mexican beer, I want a $10,000-a-night hooker!

Gattaca (1997)

An amazing movie! My biology teacher has been recommending it to me for about a year now, and I finally broke down and saw it. All I can say is, I'm glad I did! This movie (while not teaching much about DNA) does have a lot of interesting things to say about where biotechnology is going. A fantastic cast, with wonderful performances by Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. A great story about what you can accomplish with enough determination (despite any setback you might have been genetically dealt) and a great dramatic ending! If you haven't seen this one yet, go see it now!

Favorite Line:

Vincent: No, there's truly nothing remarkable about the progress of Jerome Morrow... Except that I am not Jerome Morrow.
